ABU DHABI WORLD PRO Preview

8

What an exciting week it has been in the world of BJJ, and it shows no signs of stopping soon with the ABU DHABI WORLD PRO about to commence on the 18th April. Once again proving one of the prestigious events on the BJJ calendar competitors worldwide have begun descending upon Abu Dhabi with the sole aim of bring home the gold. A massive amount of registered competitors a total 1,827 athletes will vie for the top spot in the respective divisions. There are a few changes to the way the draws will work this year in trying to push for a more diverse range of athletes in the finals. The United Arab Emirates Jiu Jitsu (UAEJJF) has introduced the country qualifiers.

HOW IT WORKS

Only two athletes per country will be allowed in each weight class of the World Pro (at brown and black belt)

The athlete with the highest ranking will automatically qualify to the World Pro, all others will have to go through the Country Qualifier (CQ) mini tournament to conquer the second vacancy.

Example: Athlete number 1 is ranked #1 in the under 110 kg category of UAEJJF’s ranking. He gets the 1st Australian vacancy of that weight class; all other -110kg Aussie athletes will compete among themselves for the 2nd spot.

The Country Qualifier will take place on Thursday, April 20. The Abu Dhabi World Pro will start the following day (April 21).

The two same-country athletes qualified for the World Pro will be placed on the same side of the brackets, and if they conquer their way to through the tournament, they will meet in the semi-finals. Meaning that there will be no finals between countrymen or countrywomen in the brown and black belt divisions.

THE AUSSIES

The Australian contingency at the UAEJJF World Pro will be strong this year with 33 registered under the Australian Flag and two athletes based in Australia fighting under their home countries banners. Mikael Yahaya (Maromba Academia Australia) originally from Malaysia and Roberto Dib Frias (Barbosa Jiu-Jitsu) representing Brazil in the 85kg CQ. The rest of the Aussie Line Up is as follows.

One thing is clear that no matter the outcomes over the upcoming days of Jiu Jitsu, all eyes will be on Abu Dhabi with some high quality BJJ on display. Keep an eye out on our Facebook page for regular updates of all the Australian athletes along with some of the other big names on display.
