April 15, 2017 was the date for the final trials before the famous ADCC World titles in Finland. Some would say potentially the most prestigious tournament in the BJJ world, more specifically the No-Gi side of the art. Held in Los Angeles, the event would determine the last 7 athletes to represent the United States in Finland.

10th Planet sent an army of athletes out to the event with 45 registered. The biggest team in representation with 3 times as many competitors the the second biggest team in Gracie Barra.

Once again Gordon Ryan somehow managed to get his name in the headlines, Gordon already having qualified for the event in Finland was there coaching his younger brother Nicky the 15 year old phenom. Gordon stepped up to the mats and took on Leandro Lo with 10 minutes notice to replace Braulio Estima after he suffered an injury warming up backstage. Gordon went down on points after Lo took the win with two perfectly timed takedowns.

Back to the young Nicky Ryan. It has long been established just how talented this young man is. He took to the mats cool, calm and collected while remaining aggressive in his approach, Nicky tore through the 66 kg division’s top athletes one by one, until he was stopped in the semi finals by Ethan Crelinsten. Unfortunately Nicky didn’t earn a spot in Finland but he did earn more respect from the Grappling world.
